Bad news if you’re reading this from Sri Lanka (and bad news if you just really love Crown Resorts’ world-famous brand and just want to see them succeed). The new government of Sri Lanka has blocked three casinos that were approved by the previous government. One of those casinos was a $400 million mega project proposed by Crown Resorts of Australia.
Facing opposition and concern from Buddhist leaders in the country, not to mention members of parliament who felt that new casinos could lead to prostitution, President Maithripala Sirisena has canceled all licenses.
So where do you gamble if you find yourself in Sri Lanka now that the government is cracking down on gambling? You go to the countries existing casinos. Yup, it turns out that Sri Lanka has quite a few casinos to choose from. They’re somehow able to operate through a legal loophole.
But what happens if those casinos end up closing their doors? While it might seem farfetched at first site, consider that the resort casinos (including Packer’s proposed facilities) were seen as a sure thing when the former government announced it. As you can see, things change on a dime.
Thankfully, Sri Lank is in close proximity to countries with casinos. Here’s a look at a few of them.
Just a 3-hour and 45-minute flight away, Singapore has two casinos that make you feel like a million bucks. If you head to either casino, make sure you bring your passport. I learned the hard way that they won’t let you in without one.
This is pretty much Las Vegas for Asia. In fact, it’s bigger than that. While there aren’t as many hotel and casino properties, Macau takes in about 6x more gambling revenue than Vegas. And you’ll find familiar casinos there, too, like Venetian and a soon-to-be-built Paris property. If you can get a direct flight from Sri Lanka, you’re looking at about 5 hours.
Upset that you can’t experience the legendary Crown Casino brand in Sri Lanka? You can get to Sydney in about 8 hours and experience everything that Packer is famous for firsthand.
