It has been 20 years since the internet first came to be: no longer a teenager, the web is now a responsible adult with a drivers’ license who should even be able to buy alcohol in Florida and obviously play casino online in about a year or so. Here is the list of the uses we have given to the internet in the last two decades:
Social Media: Mark Zuckerberg and the inventors of Twitter can attribute this category all to themselves until Google+ or the Blackberry Messenger kicks them out of their throne.
Celeb stalking: Celebrity Privacy has been invaded not only by the tabloid media
but also by the prying eyes of those who are internet savvy.
Internet dating: Even Cher found her new beau online. Can you imagine? Love can be found anywhere and internet dating in all its forms has found a way to make a profit based on that principle.
LOLCats: Some cat lady out there in Arizona had too much time and some Html skills and voila! There are LOLCats all over the place. These sites feature cute pictures of cats doing cute little things and are websites with a really high traffic.
Shopping: As if we needed any other way to spend our money; internet shopping has made it easier to get anything you want and not even have to go get it.
Porn: Yes, you knew this one was coming. Porn has found its way into art, songs, your kids hidden stash of magazines and yes the internet as well (free and paid).
Music: Radiohead has released entire albums for free online, other artists use social media and pages like bandcamp to promote entire tours or to create branding for their projects. Music feeds the web.
Video: Since the advent of digital cameras, anyone, literally can be master of the YouTube wave as long as you have internet connection and something interesting to share. Hey, that’s how they discovered Justin Bieber.
Spam: From a king in Nigeria who needs your help to remove money from his seized acct. to a pill that will make the impossible occur (and your lady very happy): spam is what’s for breakfast (lunch and dinner too).
Online Marketing: Since everyone was on the internet, eventually your brand had to be too, that’s why the internet has severely damaged printed magazines and newspapers where it hurts the most: advertising revenue.
Bonus Item: There is one more thing that definitely belongs to this list; online gambling. Despite been relatively new, it is now a multi-billion dollar industry that accounts for thousand of sites all over the web.
